While on holiday, the Walker children spot an island. Borrowing a boat, they meet pirates seeking their uncle's trunk. After adventures with storms and cakes, the children and pirates learn friendship.

Joe, Bill and Pete are members of the "Coot Club", spending most of their time on the river in their little boat, the "Death and Glory." Trouble starts when they are blamed for setting boats free from their moorings.

Meanwhile Jeff lives at home with his straight brother Paul who's getting married but Paul's also having an affair with an older woman, Eddie's mom.
